A customer sent in a Front SAM module from a Mercedes W204, hoping it could be cloned onto a replacement unit. The symptoms were typical for this platform: intermittent communication loss, lighting that would drop out, modules that stopped reporting data.
We laid the customer's module next to one from our own reference stock to compare them side by side. And for a moment, they looked like a perfect match. Same board revision. Same component layout, screw for screw. Same connector pattern down to the pin. If you only trace a board visually, you would call it a pair without a second thought.
The part numbers on the label already said otherwise: they weren't the same. So on paper, nobody would have expected these two units to be a drop-in match to begin with. That should have settled it right there. But the board looked so identical that it was worth a second look anyway, just to be sure the part numbers weren't the only thing that had changed.
That second look is what mattered. Under the board, inside the same hardware family, the processor driving each unit carried a different mask. From the outside, nothing on the board hints at that. Two boards can be screw-for-screw identical and still not be looking at the same chip underneath.
That's the lesson worth spelling out: the part number is what actually tells you whether two modules are meant to work together. A board that looks identical is not the same thing as a board that will behave identically. The difference can be sitting inside the processor, invisible from a visual inspection alone.
It's a distinction that matters more than it sounds. The standard advice holds: match the exact part number, don't rely on how a board looks. That's correct, and it's necessary. What's less talked about is why a visual match can still be misleading in the first place, and that the mismatch can sit a layer deeper than the board itself, inside the processor family.
We didn't take this module's compatibility on faith, and we didn't take it on looks either, even though the looks were convincing. In this case, every step was verified before we told the customer what was possible, because "should work" and "does work" are two different claims, and only one of them is worth standing behind.
